I no longer use a helmet for utilitarian bike rides, but when I did I just left it with the bike and put a lock through one of the straps. Figured that thieves are after something with resale value and that not many people would be interested in buying my old, sweat-encrusted, helmet - especially after the thief cut through the straps to take it.
Sweat encrusted helmets are the most comfortable. Ebay has a brisk market for used, sweaty helmets. Wearing another guy's old, sweaty helmet is better than you probably think. It's actually pretty hot.
