Excellent advice, although I would also carry an extra, full-sized Lipton pasta meal or something similar.

During my last tour, I was in CO and had enough dinner food for only one night. I wanted to stay another day in order to acclimate my body to the drastic elevation gain. But I didn't have enough food.

A store was supposed to be nearby but it had closed for good. The proprietor of the cabin in which I stayed was no help when I told him of my plight. He didn't even offer to sell me something. Cripes, he even got irritated when I asked to use his phone so I could check around for a place to obtain additional food.

Although that was my only negative experience with a proprietor during my entire 2,500 mile tour, it illustrates the types of things that can go wrong when you least expect it. Any number of problems can occur during a tour that may prevent you from obtaining food or water. Be prepared. For example, what if your bike totally broke near sundown out in the middle of no where?
