It would seem that for at least some BF posters, the cheapest solution is always the best solution because their decisions appear to be driven by an aversion to spending any money.
All other things being equal, that's pretty rational. Since I don't enjoy wrenching even a little bit, I also look for the solution that takes the least amount of time and try to balance the time vs. money equation.
In this case, though, either way he goes a chain is a chain, so quality of results probably isn't a factor.
