Here's the illustration I was looking for, showing the foot-handlebar-hip-shoulder progression for hitting the ground.
Taken from
Mountain Bike! by William (don't call me Bill) Nealy, VeloNewsBooks 1992.
This book has been my bike-handling bible for 25 years, and while it's definitely old-school off-road oriented, the basics are the same now as they were then, physics hasn't changed much.
It's also a fun read, and it reminds me of what gnarly dudes we were, shredding the woods back in the day.
