If a person needs to use a bike for transportation and really can't afford $20, that's something of a tragedy and not a situation you should be snarky about. I'm pretty sure that has nothing to do with the OP.

If a person actually enjoys trying to clean chains and track down sources of noise, who are we to say doing that instead of spending $20 is irrational?

By the way, you apparently missed my "all other things being equal" qualifier. If the choice to spend less money is causing you to "agonize", all things are decidedly NOT equal.
