I usually leave them in 24-48 hours, while I go over the rest of the bike. Probably longer than they need.

WD 40 would probably do ok for breaking loose a stiff chain, but it’s too thin to survive as a lubricant on a chain. With ATF, you can just wipe off the excess, and hang it on the bike.
