I understand all the arguments and agree that perhaps this is a private display on public property and that over the next 100 years there may be 80,000 of these littering the landscape, etc. etc.. I suspect that the vandalism and theft might indicate that they are bothering someone. I think I would be pretty annoyed if I had to look at that every time I went out my front door.
I don't think you can logically take the position that they are effective messaging and "nothing" . I feel strongly about it because I find that people already have an exaggerated notion of how dangerous cycling is, and the symbolism here is bicycle=death. Based on the article, I also suspect this is an advocacy group putting these things in without consulting the communities that then have to live with them.
