For 50 bucks, why not? I've got three vintage C'dales and love them all, but it really depends on the person. I have a '93 H series which makes a very nice canal trail bike. As for the weird drop outs, I think you could be referring to the cantilevered dropouts the mid 90's bikes had. They could be fine, they could not be. They have a reputation for failure but I've personally never had an issue with the two bikes I have of that style. Check out the forums, there's plenty of info on them, and Vintage Cannondale as well.
