In 29x2.0, I recommend the Schwalbe Hurricane for a general all-purpose tire. It's not too heavy, but not too light, either. It's available pretty inexpensively. It has a smooth center tread for silent rolling on the road, and some light tread/side lugs for extra traction off road. I find it to be a very nice light-duty all surface tire. I have 19mm wide (internal width) rims, and they're exactly 51mm edge-to-edge (on the side lugs), inflated to about 50 psi. I'm running them on a Giant Roam, and really enjoy them.
