South Africa's got a crazy-high crime rate that just keep getting worse, and anyone who is wealthy (or is suspected of being wealthy) is a target. There's also a real possibility of a civil war breaking out in the near future. When apartheid ended and Mandela became President the crime rate started slowly climbing, but its really taken off since Mandela died. A white college chum (early 1980s) was able to get out and immigrate to the Netherlands about 15 years ago due to family ties in Europe, and he's glad he did.
