Depends. Chains have been shipped with a packing grease years back and many never would clean it off. The stories of tour riders (and early wet season racers) using grease because of the miles in such bad rain are well known to those who read past stories. These days not as likely, but I'd rather use grease then nothing at all. (Which I see too often at work on bikes coming in for service). Andy
