If you're racing at near-maximum effort but also trying to concentrate on how smoothly you're riding, you're likely making constant microadjustments to your positioning and pedaling that are draining your limited stores of energy. The instantaneous drain might be minimal, but it can make a difference over the course of a race.

If you're not racing, you can concentrate on smoothness all you like, of course.
