I would tend to agree, since my primary commuter has drop bars, but I opted for flat bars on my bad weather commuter because I get better stability and control, especially in the snow. If I had to have only one commuter bike, it would have flat bars. You can always add bar-ends for more hand postions, or even go to butterfly bars.

But considering the OP is in Florida, no snow, no hills, the Castro Valley is probably the better choice after all.
