A 10-speed Shimano shifter will not work with a SRAM rear derailleur, and vice versa -- a 10sp Shimano shifter pulls 2.3 mm of cable per click; a SRAM pulls 3.1 mm. So you have to match your right shifter with your rear derailleur. The SRAM and Shimano 10-speed cassettes have the same cog spacing; no need to change that. Just get a shifter/derailleur combo that are on the same page.
Thanks for the correct. I was under the impression that there was a degree of compatibility (at least at lower 'speeds')
Guess I gotta rethink the control group swap I was planning for my MTB
