If you're not in a theft prone area a GOOD cable lock should suffice. U-locks are a good way to go but remember You get what you pay for so $30 bucks will get you diddly.
As for the brand loyalty They're the only locks (in several independant tests) that a bike theif couldn't get through in 30 seconds. The theives KNOW this.
The key to locking your bike is to make the amount of work that the thief will have to do to get your bike outweigh the idea of finding easier pickings.
