Get a Kryptonite lock that gets left at work / school or wherever you lock up outside. (Nobody's going to steal an empty lock, that would be stupid.)
A good cable lock for those short hops is a good idea that doesn't weigh much. Personally the one I use is a Specialized Slim Rapper.

The guarantees aren't worthless just SPECIFIC too many people blame the lock for thier own stupidity. (see above)

The last bit has me confused:
At night the bike is coming INSIDE my apartment. Just during the daylight I’ll have to park it near the engineering building
The engineering building at your apartment complex or at work / school? If at home WTF? Why should they care if you bring your stuff inside?
