You'd have to define 'people'. In countries with a decent road infrastructure for cyclists, such as Denmark and Holland, most 'people' use their 50 lbs bikes every day to get comfortably and safely from A to B, preferably without flats. They don't know and don't care about size. Or weight. If it fits, it fits. If it doesn't flat it's a good tire. Schwalbe Marathon Plus' and their predecessors have always been popular with that vast majority.
And then there's 'people' like me who waste time on bicycle forums, actually read Jan's blog, and have an opinion.
