Bikes: '96 Litespeed Catalyst, '05 Litespeed Firenze, '06 Litespeed Tuscany, '20 Surly Midnight Special, All are 3x10. It is hilly around here!

You are going to need a really solid top cap to keep impacts from shoving the reenforcing rod up through the top of the steerer.

That $80 retrofit you mentioned doesn't sound like a bad investment
