If the balls and/or cone nut are not smooth...and/or you feel the grinding when you spin the wheel...they need replaced. And, you don't need a bearing press. If you disassembled the hub yourself, you can do the repair job yourself. No LBS needed.
(Note: All my bike are older road bikes. Some more modern models have pressed in bearings, I think. In that case you make need to visit the LBS.)

Well these are cartridge bearings, not cup and cone, so I think I would need a bearing press. I can disassemble the hub and see the bearings sitting there, but I have been told you need proper tools (bearing puller and press) to do a good job without damaging the hub.
I found a cheap bearing press on Ebay for about $30, so I might go this route.
How do I find out which type of cartridge bearing I need to buy? Is there a part number listed on the bearings usually?
