I think the difficulty with old mountain bikes is that for a casual buyer, it’s pretty difficult to tell the difference between a really nice one and a really lame one, because they are all 21 speed and look identical.

When I bought my hard rock in 2002 there were five different frames and maybe fifteen different builds of front suspension mountain bikes from Specialized, from Hotrock to S-Works. In thumbnails the only obvious difference is the color.
