Shimano shoes work well for my flat and wide feet also. I use a lower level MTB shoe with SPD cleats that aside from the soles with tread look like older school road shoes. In black of course...

They now have a version with laces (YEAH!!!) that will allow me to use on a platform pedal with toe clips and straps.
