I think the problem with oetiker clamps is you need a special tool. Don't know if you can make do with something like channel lock pliers or even diagonal cutters, but then again, you don't need it too tight.

There are other hose clamps available too. Fuel injection hose clamps don't have the protruding metal strap, but still have sharp corners, which you can file down a bit. Or maybe snap grip hose clamps. They're plastic, but again might have some sharp corners that you can file down or cover with tape.
