I am fascinated by skeletons, especially when I encounter them in places where the cause of death is not obvious. Did someone shoot it?

I saw this while riding a U.S.F.S. road in an area of Montana surrounded by a lot of wilderness. Looks like to be a deer or elk. The road pretty much goes nowhere and is lightly used, so death by car, while possible, seems unlikely. I am going to be back there in June. Curious to see it again.
