Bikes: '96 Litespeed Catalyst, '05 Litespeed Firenze, '06 Litespeed Tuscany, '20 Surly Midnight Special, All are 3x10. It is hilly around here!

You can get longer recessed nuts long enough to cover the threads. However, I wonder if the brake mounting bolt is strong enough to absorb the force of that friction drive and if it's a suitable mounting point. At the very least get a long enough recessed nut to engage all of the bolt's threads.
