I only know the FX, I've never ridden the DS, but I think the FX is going to be way more fun on a road than the DS, and I've ridden my FX3 with a pretty fully laden rear rack, so I think it would be just fine for commuting. You get better components on the FX3 than the DS3 because I think they skimp on the DS a little bit to compensate for the cost of the suspension.

The answer may also depend on what that other 20% is. The FX3 definitely sucks on rocks, the DS might be a bit better there, but the FX3 is really more of a flat bar road bike. BTW, I can go quite fast on my FX3, doubt I could on the DS.
