I've got clip ons I just installed on my cheap stock alloy bars. One thing is that you don't just gently rest your arms in the pads and steer the bike with your hands. I often find myself grabbing the bars and putting weight on them, especially when reposition myself in the saddle. If I don't have them torqued down really tight, they don't stay put.
