Only DEET for bugs. Black bears almost never mess with you, even when close. Chances of encountering a grizzly were extremely remote. But they do live up there.
Interestingly, the day I saw the bear the campground host and his girlfriend took a drive up some side road from the road I was on. A mountain lion jumped down from a cliff and ran in front of their vehicle for a while.
