Then I got a driver's license, and probably compiled 200 miles of riding (total) over the next 25 years. I didn't actually buy a bike for myself to ride until 2015-- I've been around bikes my whole life, but I've been cycling for about 4 years.
My experience is pretty close to that of wphamilton. No such thing as "recreational cycling" when the only other way to get around is walking. Getting into a car in SoCal at 17 was absolute freedom. Fast forward to now and I might drive a car 2 days a week.
I've been riding to go places since I was 11 years old. After various people trying to teach me, I learned by myself on my brother's bike. Within a week, I rode to the next town to visit a friend, and I've been riding for transportation ever since, which is around 51 years. I don't know if people here count me as a "real" rider, though. I don't keep track of miles or ride in groups ever, but I'm guessing I actually ride more than most people who ride as a hobby thing.
