Is it possible to delete a thread that I started, perhaps by simply deleting the first post? If so, please help me figure out how to do so; when I go to edit my thread, I do not find an option to delete my post, as I normally would.

I was under the impression that it was possible to delete one's own thread - and indeed, recall a heated discussion a couple of years ago after some posters were unhappy that the OP deleted the entire thread. With that, I started a 'dummy' thread to learn how to post a poll.
