I honestly have
my general attitude is that if I start a thread, I have some kind of obligation to check in on it and keep it on track no strong opinions on whether OPs should be allowed to delete their threads.
I lean toward yes; but. Others might think that is a job solely for the mods.

Saves the mods time and energy when a thread goes off the rails on the third post. Instead of bothering them, just delete the thread! Quick and easy!

Frankly, I don’t see the reason to be so proprietary about a thread, once it is submitted and opened to a large widely varied audience. If it gets too far off-topic, I have seen other subscribers object, and if the OP is interesting enough, likely a subsequent subscriber we will send it back on track. And maybe the deviation is more interesting than the OP
I think the Moderators provide a generally recognized sensibility beyond an OP’s personal standards.
Besides, any and all posts keep a thread alive (except those that cause it to be closed)
