From the way you describe this doesn't seem serious to me. Must be quad or patellar tendinitis. I've effectively eliminated mild pains around the knee area with ice therapy and rest alone. Apply icepad for 15mins 4-5 times or more a day and DO NO exercise of any kind for a week at least! Don't be carried away, light pedaling is no way to recover it only prolongs the inflammation...Drugs don't have a place here unless the pain hampers usual everyday activities like walking
