The rear freewheel does indeed freewheel as well. Has individual pawls for each cog if I recall, and friction plates between each cog.
Can you help explain this mechanism a bit more? I honestly wasn't even aware this was something different than your regular old crankset. What do you mean by freewheel and that there is an option to freewheel the rear wheel? Pretend like you're explaining it to someone who knows nothing haha
