Bike East is a free annual community bike tour that changes the narrative about what happens in Brownsville and East New York! Since inception the Bike East tour has quadrupled in size from 40 cyclists of all backgrounds and abilities to over 120 local registrants in 2018. The tour is a positive event that attracts riders from around the city and encourages neighbors of these two historically distressed neighborhoods—best known for high crime and lifestyle related disease (heart disease and diabetes) - to become familiar with their community’s many outdoor active lifestyle assets by bike.
In its 6th year Bike East is continues to reach healthy lifestyle mission beyond a bike tour. The Bike East celebration will include a day-long outdoor Active Lifestyle Fair that makes fitness accessible to the entire community—cyclists and non-cyclists alike! This year's 20 mile bike tour will ride through East New York and Brownsville then out to stops to Floyd Bennett Field.
At the Active Lifestyle Fair, participants of all ages and abilities can participate in free hourly fitness classes led from the Bike East stage by local fitness instructors. Those interested in learning to bike can also join an adult or youth learn-to-ride class . This special opportunity will enable community members to begin to reap the health benefits of cycling and join the Bike East tour in years to come!
