I have an acquaintance who is also looking for a new bike; she's tired of her 35 lb Magna, so I steered her toward a LBS and possibly a Sirrus, also purple. She certainly seemed to like it, and the wrench who helped her turned out to have grown up in the same place she did, so they had a grand time. Different experience from the other LBS; they showed her $1000 bikes. Which reminds me, I need to email her.
I know what you mean, still not a bad thing to look at the $1K stuff and listen to the spiel, form an opinion, glean and process info especially when they have you to help them at the end of the day. It can be fun to let the retail shop run on and then say "Tx but I'm really looking for something used in the $200 or less range that's a very good deal".
