Yes the Q factor has deffinitely got wider over the years. This was partialy helped by the narrower 120mm rear wheel spacing and as the spacing has gone to 130 mm then the Q factor has had to get wider anyway. I've got some old shimano cranks with the arms parrallel to the chainrings. Look at modern crank arms and they bend out a little.
