Simplicity is bliss, especially on a fast bike.
Nothing wrong with simplicity! But if you're running a single chainring with a widerange cassette, that means big gaps between gears, and that's not for everyone.

Hence the various gearing permutations for 20" folders - triple cranks or 3x IGH's - to allow smaller steps between gears within the same total gear range.
