If you decide to stick with the shorter right-angle hoses, don't tighten the brake levers on the bars anymore than you have to in order to prevent them from moving when you ride.

The idea is that in a crash, the short hoses might get broken by the bar twisting backwards, and if the levers can rotate on the bars under force it might prevent this.
