I agree that on very rough pavement, shocks make the bike faster. And while you find the loss minimal, I found it constant. Over the years I had two Moultons and eventually parted with them. I have not had a Birdy. My small wheel bike is my Brompton, which has a shock and needs the shock for comfort.
