Unless you're achieved the top of your genetic potential, you still have room to improve both ends; you raise the entire curve upwards. During the season, if you have certain races that are more important than others, like championships, you can devise macrocycles that'll give you a peak specific to the event. Otherwise, do a well-balanced program that straddles the extremes. This works best for a schedule where you do 2-3 races per weekend continuously.
