Seriously, I recently laced my first wheels (re-spoking Schwinn Superior wheels with corroded spokes). I thought I'd dished the wheels ok using the stand (Park TS-2.2) but in checking them subsequently they were off. Figured out that it was a bent axle. So now I use a cone wrench to rotate the axle with the wheel held in place (not rotating). If the rim moves back and forth, the axle is suspect. If not, I feel pretty confident that I'm close if the stand shows symmetry (I've zeroed out the truing stand). But after all that, I do check dishing with an old Var dishing tool. In this case, it was pretty close.
