Tullio Campagnolo supposedly invented the quick release as an alternative to wingnuts after he had difficulty removing them during a race in winter conditions. Wingnuts are really pretty nice to use, but not with frozen fingers.

Until the quick release gained acceptance, wingnuts were used on many high-end road bikes.
