17 degree stems are designed to be near horizontal for road bike typical head tube geometry. So changing to a longer stem would remain constant in height. If you like the slight upward rise of your 8 degree stem, and you want a longer one but no higher - you may have to play around with longer stems of slightly different angles.
Which direction is your 8 degree stem facing -upward or downward? A picture would be helpful here.
