The notion that there was a distinction between state's rights and slavery as issues was entirely a post-war invention to justify the lost cause mythology. This revisionism was so wrapped up in Jim Crow that I'm going to push back any time I see someone promoting this garbage.

states rights are still being fought to this day in the court systems for one cause or another (it’s a big part of our constitution and also our presidential elections)
