One side road that is kind of a local road but rarely used is between Keystone and Hill City. Not terribly difficult, bypass traffic and its about 10 miles right though the thick of the woods. It mirrors the 1880 train route. Its called Old Hill City road, one of my favorites. You usually see lots of wildlife and very little traffic except the 1880's train. Its a shortcut between the two towns.
Yeah. I mentioned that above. Great ride. I rode it the first time when I did a loop from the KOA to Keystone and then back via SD 244. I maybe saw two moving vehciles. Further down the road crosses the scenic railroad several times. I timed my ride so that I was out there when the train was heading to Keystone. I didn't want to take chances and make the engineer nervous so I stopped at every crossing instead of trying to beat the train. Got so many waves from tourists every time the train passed. Then I would ride ahead and wait at the next crossing.
