I've had fish in China where they lopped off the head and tail, cooked the middle part, put the head and the tail back on the plate, and put the cooked fish back in the middle.

The fish head was still alive throughout dinner. Flopping around on the plate. It was like living through Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
