Wide 24" (520) tires

The family is getting ready to ride the Erie Canal this summer and two of the kids are on 24" bikes, one currently has maxxis 24x1 3/8 cross tires on it but these were a little on the narrow side when riding the Confederation trail at PEI last year. Although all of the Erie Trail I've lived near has been more packed and had less loose gravel a wider tire would be more comfortable long term.
One of the bikes can go to a 24x 1 3/8 and the bike originally came with that wheel size with a wider cross tire that I might use but is still a little tall for the kid to comfortably ride. The other can't use any other size. What are recumbents running for the rail trails in this wheel size, or do you just skip this size?
