The fact that Sambas have been in production for 70 years makes them as classic and clips and straps.

On my 10 road bikes I have a variety of pedals/toe cages and these shoes are comfortable in all of them. The soles grip the pedals very well but are also easy to pull out when needed.

And this combination is comfortable for driving home in, shopping on the way home, stopping for breakfast. "I ain't got no complaints."
After all this discussion it seems I was doing everything wrong. It made me look at the MKS Website and Toe Clip measurements and positioning the ball of the foot over the spindle. The ball of my foot was way off the spindle. I added a spacer ( okay, a block ofv1/2" plywood) and longer bolts with hex heads so I could really tighten them. Then I after listening to everyone about harder soled shoes and both of ya'll and particularly 63Rickert, I dug out some old leather soled dress shoes and put an orthotic plastic insole in them and they worked pretty darn well along with the new foot positioning. It is good for at least 1/2 a gear. All this time and I didn't know...Thanks, mjac
