I found that the SPD pedals, with their small platform, allowed my foot to roll to the outside, stressing the ITB. It was important for me to position my foot correctly using Lemond wedges. Use these, if necessary, with a pedal with a broader base, to align your foot correctly over the pedal. Float may be important as well--I use Look pedals with 9 deg. of float--not as much as Speedplays but plenty for me. However, the broader platform of the Looks and the proper alignment using wedges combined with the float helped me a lot, but I should stress that this is very difficult to do properly on your own. It is worth every penny to have a proper fitting using the Fit Kit R.A.D. system by someone who knows whether you need your foot canted with wedges, or shimmed to compensate for a leg length discrepancy, if applicable. To me, those things made all the difference in the world. Not an easy fix, but I learned the hard way that it's worth it.
