Vintage MTBs are getting more popular but $2000 is a bit much for even vintage road bikes which aren't like pristine pre-Columbus-family Cinellis or something.
And vintage MTB are getting more popular because they make great platforms for all sorts of other riding- touring, commuting, light trails, just looking fecking cool is where they shine. that and being indestructible.
unless its a unique bike hand built by a MTB pioneer, then yeah.. lets keep things in the hundreds and not thousands.
