Disagree. This section existed back when values were going up. So it could have been "blamed" for the increasing values.

95% of the vintage MTBs I see are priced under the sum of the parts, often priced under the value of just one part. I've picked up six MTBs this trip. None cost more than just the crankset. A couple of the super desirable models are priced over parts, but they are the exception. BMX is red hot right now, so survivors in great condition are going to bring a premium. On the other hand, more average BMX bikes also are available at a small fraction of the parts.
